Walks Around Chulmleigh

Introduction

The Chulmleigh and Eggesford Forest walks both start in Chulmleigh. The Burrington & Hollocombe walk starts in Burrington and is reached by bus or car. The Chawleigh, Affeton & Cheldon walk can be shortened by starting and finishing in Chawleigh, and is accessible by car or bus. The Tarka Trail to North Tawton walk explores the Tarka Trail from Chawleigh, but is bus accessible from Chulmleigh. The aim is to cater both for those who do not wish to use their cars and also for those people who wish to walk while others in their group use their cars. These walks also provide a week's walking for those without transport (but remember - there are no Sunday buses). Turner's bus times can be checked at their Chulmleigh office whilst the "First" bus timetable is available from Turners or the post office.

The Parish Council has a detailed map of all the footpaths and bridleways in Chulmleigh Parish.  This is displayed on the Parish Notice Board.  A full colour guide to all these is available from Mr Bass at Glebe Cottage, Chulmleigh (01769 580757) priced at £2.

The abbreviation (W/M) stands for Waymarker, a yellow arrow on a circular disc, except for The Tarka Trail, where the arrow is replaced by an otter paw print.

A printed leaflet version of the information about these walks is also available.  2½ inch Explorer map 127 covers all the walks, except some of the Tarka Trail to North Tawton walk which can be found on map 113.

Bus service numbers and times should ALWAYS be checked prior to setting out on the walk.

Those not staying in the area should note that Eggesford Station provides a rail link which runs between Barnstaple and Exeter.  For Chulmleigh take the signed Chawleigh Road and at the top of the hill a footpath is signed left to Chulmleigh.  The Eggesford Forest walk passes Eggesford Station.  For the Tarka Trail, go up the road signed to Eggesford Garden Centre (café!) and proceed past this to Eggesford Church, where the Tarka Trail is signed.  Follow this to Chenson where you can join the trail.  At the Crediton end, return by train instead of the suggested bus.  The Burrington & Hollocombe walk is not accessible.

None of these walks are arduous and all except the Tarka Trail to North Tawton can be shortened.  The duration of the walks given is very approximate, depending on the age and fitness of the participant!  A map is not essential but will add to your enjoyment.

Comments would be welcomed by Mr Worrall, The Cottage, 15 Fore Street, Chulmleigh.

Please remember, as this is sheep country, please do keep your dog on a lead.  Also, a mobile phone can be a very useful safety aid.
