The Old Bakehouse

The Old Bakehouse, Chulmleigh, Devon

The Old Bakehouse, 9K

The Saxons came to Chulmleigh in about 815 AD and created a settlement on a clearing in the forest high up above the Little dart and Taw valleys. They chose this site because it was easy to defend and well protected from the weather. It was then a peaceful place set apart from the rest of the world, and today, this description still holds true. The countryside around our town has been designated an 'area of tranquillity'. This means that our roads and lanes are largely free from smelly traffic; the air is crystal clear; and the starry night sky really has to be seen to be described!

Our house was built in about 1520 and is reputed to be the most ancient building in Chulmleigh. It belonged originally to generations of wool merchants who gave their wealth to the building of our magnificent parish church of St Mary Magdalene.

Devon is the second largest county in England, with a population of only 900,000 people. You are unlikely to encounter a traffic jam on the roads between Dartmoor and Exmoor! This, plus our central location, make us an ideal touring centre. Devon boasts many National Trust properties and glorious gardens, as well as intriguing ancient villages and market towns. We have wonderful coastlines and beaches to the north and south, some within easy driving distance of Chulmleigh.

Around us are emerald green hills and peaceful lanes, which offer beautiful walks and rides. There are numerous bridleways and public footpaths in the area. Opportunities for horse riding, golfing, fishing and painting are all available nearby.

How to find us

Our guest house is situated in South Molton street, close to Red Lion square. It is opposite the Winston Pincombe land rover garage and is clearly marked with signs.
